Tax Season Checklist: What Do You Need to Submit Your Personal Income Tax?
With the SARS filing season officially opening soon, it’s time to stop hunting for papers at the last minute! Gathering your supporting documents early is the secret to a seamless, stress-free submission (and getting your refund faster).Even though SARS prepopulates a lot of data, it is your legal responsibility to verify that everything is 100% accurate before you submit.
Here is the ultimate checklist of what you need to collect for the 2026 Year of Assessment (March 2025 – February 2026):
1: Proof of Income
IRP5/IT3(a) Certificate(s): From your employer(s).
IT3(b) Certificates: For investment income, dividends, and interest earned from your bank or financial institutions.
Financial Statements: If you run a side hustle, freelance, or operate a sole proprietorship.
Rental Income Statements: If you earn money from a property you rent out.
2: Tax Deductions
Medical Aid Certificate & Contribution Statements: Plus a list of all out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by your medical aid.
Retirement Annuity (RA) IT3(f) Certificate: Your contributions to a registered retirement fund are tax-deductible!
Logbook for Travel Allowance: If you receive a travel allowance or use a company car, you must have a detailed logbook (including opening/closing kilometres and business vs. private mileage).
3: Capital Gains & Foreign Income
IT3(c) Certificates: If you sold shares, unit trusts, or crypto.
Property Sale Documents: If you sold an investment property or a second home during the tax year.
Foreign Income Statements: If you earned foreign currency or worked outside South Africa.
4: Identity & Bank Verification
Clear copy of your ID or Passport

Auto-Assessments: 1 July – 12 July 2026
Non-Provisional Taxpayers (Salaried Individuals): Deadline is 23 October 2026.
Provisional Taxpayers (Freelancers/Business Owners): Deadline is 22 January 2027
